Surgery to Remove Wisdom Teeth

By the age of 18, the average adult has 32 teeth, but the average mouth is not always large enough to hold them all. Additionally, orthodontists routinely shy away from extracting permanent teeth during orthodontic treatment, leaving people with wisdom teeth wedged in the back of their jaws. These back molars are your third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth”. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, they do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this is not often the case.

WHY ARE WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

Wisdom teeth are removed primarily to eliminate the potential for infection and damage to the adjacent teeth. Contrary to popular belief, they do not cause crowding. In fact, there has never been a study published in the world literature to prove that they do. But they do cause infection. Infection causes bone loss, damage to adjacent teeth and pain. Once symptoms of gum disease, swelling, food impaction or pain begin, removal is the most prudent course. The symptoms will not subside until the teeth are removed.

CAN I WAIT UNTIL I AM OLDER TO HAVE MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

Between the ages of 17 and 25, there is a short window of opportunity to remove wisdom teeth with relative ease and with little risk of complications. This is because the roots have not fully developed or entwined themselves in the nerves located in the jawbone.

The Procedure

In most cases, the removal of wisdom teeth is performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. These options, as well as the surgical risks, will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed. Once the teeth are removed, the gum is sutured. You will rest under our supervision until you are ready to be taken home. Upon discharge, your post-operative kit will include postoperative instructions, prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics, a follow-up appointment and our innovative Cool Comfort Wrap, which will dramatically decrease your recovery time.

WHAT DOES “IMPACTED” MEAN?

Impacted teeth are those that are unable to properly erupt through the gums. It is very common to have impacted wisdom teeth – in fact, 9 out of 10 people have at least one!

WHAT IS DRY SOCKET?

Dry socket is a very painful complication that can sometimes occur following extraction of a tooth. Dry socket refers to a surgical that does not heal properly with increasing pain in the region that radiates to the surrounding muscles and teeth.  It is best described as an irritated bone in the surgery site.  Fortunately, dry sockets can usually be avoided by carefully following home-care instructions.

I have been having pain in my wisdom teeth for years now. My dentist told me I needed to get them out and they could do them in office. I went to Dr. Lee for his recommendation and because of the complications, I felt more comfortable going to Dr. Lee. I have zero pain now and am very happy everything went well!

Best all around experience that I've ever had at a doctors office. But the best part - Very little discomfort after returning home from having all four wisdom teeth removed. Only took one pain pill, but I'm not even sure I would have needed that - my Dad gave it to me before the numbing medication wore off. Dr. Lee also removed my Dad's wisdom teeth years ago and my Dad claims he played basketball that same evening. Dr. Lee removed my brother Will's wisdom teeth two weeks after he did mine and Will also had a great experience - not one Percocet was needed. All around 5-star experience!!!!
